The workshop titled “Child-Centered Journalism: What It Is Not,” held at Istanbul Gelisim University, opened a discussion on child rights-oriented journalism practices in the field of communication. With strong student participation, the event focused on how children are represented in media content, the impact of news language on children’s lives, and ethical responsibility in journalism.
The workshop was conducted with the participation of Sinan Oğan, known for his work in the fields of social work and psychology. Throughout the program, child-centered journalism was evaluated within the framework of the four core principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Topics such as the best interests of the child, privacy rights, discriminatory representation, and the right to digital forgetting were discussed through interactive activities.
During the workshop, students analyzed real news examples from an ethical perspective and evaluated the possible effects of news texts on children. Through group work and rewriting exercises, participants gained practical experience in producing alternative news language that protects children’s dignity and rights.
In the closing evaluation session, students emphasized the importance of ethical awareness in media production processes and shared their reflections on the necessity of child rights-based journalism.
