Members of the SKYNET Student Club of the Department of Aviation Management at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Istanbul Gelisim University, carried out a technical field trip to Istanbul Airport on December 18, 2025, accompanied by their faculty advisor, Dr. Mehmet Emin Keke.
Within the scope of the visit, students had the opportunity to examine on-site the operational processes of a global mega hub such as Istanbul Airport (IGA). The main objective of the trip was to observe critical systems such as the APOC (Airport Operations Center), where flight traffic and crisis management are conducted, and the BHS (Baggage Handling System), which manages baggage operations, in order to see how logistics, automation, and information technology concepts covered in coursework are successfully applied in real-world operations.
The program also included observations of apron area ground operations, one of the key components of airport activities, as well as the ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) unit’s emergency management practices and safety protocols. Through the visit, students gained firsthand insight into the complex structure of airport operations that run continuously 24/7 and obtained valuable perspectives on career opportunities within the aviation sector.
