 Autonomous UAV-Based Technological Solution Against Agricultural Frost Developed by IGU Academics

Academics from Istanbul Gelisim University have developed an innovative technological solution to mitigate agricultural losses caused by frost events. The “Technological Frost Control” project was developed by Res. Asst. Gamze Aytep from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Aircraft Maintenance and Repair, and Res. Asst. Hüseyin Furkan Çelik from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Aeronautical Engineering, under the coordination of the Istanbul Gelisim University Technology Transfer Office.

The project participated in the TEKNOFEST 2022 Agricultural Technologies Competition and achieved finalist status. Designed to address sudden and severe agricultural losses caused by frost, the system monitors ambient temperature through sensors and automatically initiates fogging intervention via an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) when critical temperature thresholds are reached. This autonomous structure enables rapid and effective frost prevention with minimal human intervention.



The system architecture is based on a six-rotor (hexacopter) rotary-wing UAV, integrated with a Pixhawk flight control unit, temperature sensors, Global Positioning System (GPS), and communication components. Within the scope of the project, a handheld fogging device was re-engineered to be compatible with UAV deployment and enhanced with automatic ignition and operation capabilities through compressor and servo motor integration.
