  Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies was the only Social Sciences Representative at the 2209 A/B Science–Mathematics Student Workshop

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Istanbul Gelisim University, achieved a notable success by taking part in the “2209 A/B Science–Mathematics Student Workshop,” organized by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yıldız Technical University on 21 May 2025. A total of 101 projects were featured at the workshop, which focused on TÜBİTAK 2209-A and 2209-B student research projects. In the field of social sciences, Istanbul Gelisim University was the only institution represented.

The study conducted by Zehra Sümeyye Yalçın and Zehra Oturakçı under the supervision of Research Assistant Serhat Kahyaoğlu is titled “A Comparison of Trained Generative AI Translation, Untrained Generative AI Translation, and Neural Machine Translation Outputs in the Context of Texts for Use (Mathematics).” The project evaluates English translations of utilitarian texts—such as informational signage located across public spaces on campus—and explores the potential of trained generative AI models in improving translation quality.

The study goes beyond qualitative analysis and incorporates objective quality assessment using xCOMET (Crosslingual Optimized Metric for Evaluation of Translation), a neural network system supported by a large language model. Through this system, both sentence-level quality scores are calculated and translation errors are classified in detail according to the MQM (Multidimensional Quality Metrics) framework.

Long-term goals of the project include developing a terminology database and a trained AI model tailored to the university’s institutional communication needs, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and reusability of campus-wide informational texts.

During the workshop—at which a live connection with CERN was also established—IGU’s presence in the field of social sciences stood out. This interdisciplinary contribution, presented within a natural science–oriented event, offered a unique example at the intersection of translation technologies and artificial intelligence applications.

The students’ poster was reviewed by YTU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Salim YÜCE, YTU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisor Assoc. Prof. Senem ÖNER BULUT, and several members of the scientific committee.
