ADEP Project Involving İGÜ Academics Approved: A New Era in Refrigerator Technologies

İstanbul Gelisim University is leading the development of innovative refrigerator technologies designed to extend the shelf life of food through the ADEP project, which includes İGÜ Vice-Rector Prof. S. Arda Öztürkcan and Asst. Prof. Nevruz Berna Tatlısu, Head of the UBF Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts.

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) has added another initiative to its strategic work in the fields of food technology and sustainability. The comprehensive project, coordinated by Yıldız Technical University and involving our university’s academic staff as researchers, has been awarded funding under the Research Universities Support Programme (ADEP).

Innovative Preservation Technologies and Sustainability
Developed within the International Food Innovation Research Science and Technology Team (FIRST) research network, the project titled ‘Development of a Device to Create a Controlled-Modified Atmosphere in the Refrigerator and Its Application to Extend the Shelf Life of Different Food Groups in the Refrigerator’ aims to revolutionise domestic refrigeration systems. The study, which will run for 24 months and is supported by a budget of 2,390,000 TL, plans to develop a device that will extend the shelf life of basic food groups such as fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products, thereby minimising food waste and providing a technological contribution to sustainable food systems.

Extensive Academic Collaboration
Led by Assoc. Prof. Hasan Cankurt, a faculty member at Yıldız Technical University, this significant project features a strong academic team from Istanbul Gelişim University acting as researchers. The successful implementation of the project and its scientific outputs are supported by Prof. S. Arda Öztürkcan, Vice-Rector of Istanbul Gelişim University, and Asst. Prof. Nevruz Berna Tatlısu, Head of the UBF Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts and Asst. Prof. Eda Şensu are making strategic contributions to the successful implementation of the project and its scientific outputs. This large-scale study, involving 62 researchers from 36 different universities and institutions, serves as a prime example of interdisciplinary collaboration.

A Scientific Solution to Combat Food Waste
The project aims to go beyond merely producing academic output and to offer a concrete technological solution to prevent food waste in everyday life. At a time when food security has become a global priority, the system to be developed is expected to provide significant added value at both sectoral and societal levels.

As Istanbul Gelişim University, we congratulate our esteemed academics involved in this prestigious project, the project leader, and the entire research team, and wish them every success in their scientific endeavours.
