Internship

Internship Duration and Periods

In the Department of English Translation and Interpreting, internships are completed as a total of 30 working days during the summer months following the second semester.

Regular (daytime) education students who are not subject to compulsory course attendance may also complete their internships during the academic semesters.

In internship programs, one week is counted as five working days. At workplaces where Saturdays are worked, Saturday is also counted as a working day.

Official and religious holidays are not counted as working days.

Summer internships begin on the last day of the spring semester final examinations.

For students who will take make-up examinations or enroll in summer school courses, the obligations of course attendance, examinations, and internship attendance are the student's own responsibility. No excuse on the part of the student removes these obligations.

Internships must be completed without interruption within the designated periods. Medical reports of up to five working days, and absences of up to three working days deemed acceptable by the workplace internship supervisor, are accepted as excused.

A student who fails to attend at least nine working days of the internship, whether excused or unexcused, is deemed not to have completed any internship.

A number of working days equal to the excused/unexcused absence is added to the internship period. In this case, upon the student's application, supplementary insurance procedures are carried out for the missing days. If the student or the internship workplace fails to report this situation, the responsibility rests with them.

No supplementary insurance procedures are carried out for students who voluntarily extend the designated internship period.

Students whose curricula do not include a compulsory internship may not apply for a voluntary internship.

Determination of Internship Placements

Finding an internship placement is the student's responsibility. The relevant department/program chair or internship coordinator decides whether the placement proposed by the student is suitable.
Internship placements and student quotas allocated to İstanbul Gelişim University by public or private institutions and organizations in Türkiye and abroad are coordinated by the department/program chair's office.
With the approval of the relevant units, students may also complete their internships at research centers or units within the University.

Internship Application

Students applying for an internship complete three copies of the Compulsory Internship Form and, after having them approved by the dean/director or deputy of the relevant unit, the chair or vice chair of the department, and the internship workplace supervisor, have all three forms approved by the Student Affairs Office at least seven days before the internship start date so that social security registration can be completed. One approved form is submitted to the Student Affairs Office, one to the Program/Department Chair, and one to the institution where the internship will take place. For students whose application forms are approved, all insurance procedures for the dates specified on the form are carried out by İstanbul Gelişim University.
No insurance procedures are carried out by the University for students who have been accepted for an internship abroad and can document that they have obtained private health insurance covering the internship period, or for students permitted by the relevant boards of directors to complete their internships under Erasmus+ traineeship mobility.
Students who begin their internships record their internship activities daily in an internship notebook accessible from the web page and, at the end of the internship, submit the notebook to the internship coordinator after having each page approved by the workplace supervisor.

Evaluation of the Internship

The Internship Committee examines and evaluates the internship notebooks and all related documents submitted to it, and records the evaluation results on the internship evaluation form.

As a result of the evaluation, the Committee may request corrections to the student's internship notebook within one month at the latest, or may reject it.

A copy of the evaluation form for rejected and unapproved internship notebooks is delivered to the student by the internship coordinator against signature.

Internship notebooks and evaluation forms found suitable and approved are delivered to the internship coordinator with an official record.

The internship documents of students permitted by the relevant board of directors to complete their internships abroad are examined by the internship evaluation committee, and the outcome is reported, together with the internship evaluation form, to the dean's or director's office through the relevant internship coordinator.

Students whose internship notebooks are not approved apply to the Student Affairs Directorate within five working days of the date on which the evaluation forms are communicated to them or the date on which the grades are announced.

Students who, with or without a justified and valid excuse, fail to complete their internship work within the period of study stipulated by Higher Education Law No. 2547 are not awarded a diploma.

Throughout the internship, students are required to comply with the provisions of the Student Disciplinary Regulation for Higher Education Institutions. The internships of students who violate these provisions are deemed incomplete, and disciplinary proceedings are initiated against them.

For damages caused to the internship workplace through their own fault, students are subject to the same liability as workplace personnel; İstanbul Gelişim University bears no responsibility in this regard.

Internship notebooks are kept in the student's personal file.

Students who enroll at İstanbul Gelişim University through lateral/vertical transfer or central placement, and whose internships completed at their previous institutions are found wholly or partially unsuitable, must complete the remaining days of their internships.

Students must comply with the rules and instructions of the institutions and organizations where they intern regarding working conditions, discipline, and occupational safety.

Students who fail to fulfill their internship requirement within the standard period of study must, in order to apply for an internship, pay the internship fee determined by the Board of Trustees under the Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulation.

Department boards may, with the approval of the relevant board of directors, establish internship implementation principles.

These provisions cover the activities and principles related to the training, practice, and internships that İstanbul Gelişim University students with compulsory internships in their associate, undergraduate, or graduate curricula will complete at workplaces in Türkiye and abroad, with the aim of reinforcing the theoretical knowledge and experience they have acquired during their education; developing the skills they have gained in laboratory and workshop practice; and familiarizing them with their personal responsibilities at the workplace, workplace relations, the production process, and new technologies. Professional or field practice related to compulsory or elective courses in the curricula falls outside this scope.

As of July 4, 2025, internship applications for the Compulsory Summer Internship course are submitted online by the student through the OBIS system.
