Chair's Message

The English Translation and Interpreting undergraduate program at İstanbul Gelişim University was founded in 2019 as a four-year program under the School of Applied Sciences. After two years of instruction under the School of Applied Sciences, the program continued to provide education within the Faculty of Applied Sciences when the School attained faculty status in 2021.

The language of instruction is English, and the courses in the program are built on three main pillars: Interdisciplinary Courses, Language Courses, and Translation Field Courses. Our curriculum includes second foreign language courses as electives starting in the fifth semester.

As in every field, the significance and scope of translation studies have grown considerably in the 21st century — an information age defined by rapid development, globalization, and advanced technology. As translation, the most valuable and effective means of intercultural communication, has gained importance, the standing of translators in the eyes of society and the roles they assume have been positively affected. Translation has thus come to be associated not only with language proficiency but also with multiculturalism, taking on a key role in dialogue between societies. For these reasons, the need in our country for educated translators who are aware of the social and cultural dimensions of translation continues to grow with each passing day.

Our undergraduate program aims to give students awareness across all areas related to translation and to train the qualified translators and future academics that the field needs: graduates who combine theoretical knowledge with a command of translation software, who can approach existing applications critically, who embrace research and development as a mission, and who have gained hands-on experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting in our state-of-the-art Simultaneous Interpreting Laboratory.
